About Me

My photo
I'm not doing this project to necessarily make new longterm friends, or go have a drink with these people. Nor is it to pass any judgements on ones life. My goal is to simply meet interesting, and maybe not so interesting strangers who I wouldve never taken the time to talk to otherwise. One that may differ, or perhaps relate to my own life. So many times, you walk past someone, and they wont even raise their head in the slightest to say hello. I'll never understand why. The challenge to myself is not only to surpass that simple hello with one person a day, but to convince them to look into my lens and tell me something about themselves. My name is Amanda Surkin, and this is my journey of meeting 100 new faces. Take the time to listen, you may learn something :)

Stranger #100

Meet William Heil.

"I do a lot of fishing! That's mostly all I do to get out of the house and relax. I've been fishing since I was 9 years old. I fish for salmon, but catching bass is my favorite! I go all over to fish. I've gone to New York, Jersey, Maryland, etc. I don't keep any of them unless I catch flounder or salmon. I'm retired, I had a heart attack 6-7 years ago and I lost my job because of it. I was making $27/hr. I'm single, I just go out and relax. I also play a lot of video games! I play black ops a lot, it's an army game! I also have slot machines in my house that I play! I live with my nephew now because my landlord raised the rent on me. I fixed the house up so much, and one day he called me while I was at work and asked to talk to me. So, I asked my boss if I could leave to talk to him, I only lived 5 min away, and he let me go. He told me he was raising my rent $150, and if I don't pay it, get out. I went back to work, and ten minutes later, I had my heart attack. It's $150 a month for my medicine, and I have to take it for the rest of my life. First thing in the morning, and at night before bed.

I've been married twice, and my first wife cheated on me with one of my nephews. When I thought the child was mine, I had to pay child support and the kid wound up being my nephews and not mine. She had two kids with him. I got married ten years later to another woman who was a liar. She would borrow my car, and tell me she was going to work. One day I called her work to tell her to pick up some steaks so we can cook dinner, and her boss told me that she hasn't been in work for two weeks. I said cya to her! I'm a nice guy! I play darts, and monopoly with my buddy up at his house. We also play Triple E with pennies, and we have a ball!"- William

Meet Adam.

"I'm a poet. I've been writing for 5 months. I'm an artist, an urban artist, and I do graffiti. I do pictures too, maybe turn a mailbox into a monster! I do art for fun, and I've been doing it since I was 8 years old. I've always loved drawing. The more you do, the better you get at it. I also dress up as the ninja turtles. I have a hat for all of them! St. Pattys day, i'll wear orange. For Christmas, I'll wear red. I wear blue a lot, because it's my favorite. I like their lifestyle. I love the martial arts, partying, and the movies!"- Adam

Stranger #98

Meet Joe F.

"My wife works full time, and I'm a stay at home dad. I'm a learning coach, and my kids go to cyber school. My daughter is 15, and my son is 12. They've been in cyber school since 1st grade. The school is called Commonwealth Connections Academy (also known as CCA). They send books, and any equipment that's necessary. Basically they have a teacher from the school, and they communicate 1-2 times a month by phone. They also have live lessons. You only need to attend the live lessons if you need extra help or if your grades fall. So, mostly when they're in the lower grades, they're more dependent on me, but when they get older, they work by themselves more. The school has a field trip kind of thing to socialize all of the students. The school is for the whole state of Pennsylvania.

I've been married for 16 years in July. My wife does computer work, she's an IT analyst. I have 5 cats, and I got my oldest car before my daughter was born. My family jokes a lot, and I say that my first cat is my first born son! Our family loves all kinds of animals. We've had a rabbit, snake, mouse, 10 different cats at different times, guinea pig, and fish. I think birds are the only animal we've never had. My family aren't dog people. We don't know how to train a dog at all. When I was 10, we had a dog, someone left the front door open, our dog got out, and got hit by a taxi. After that, I just had cats all of my life. One of my cats was the most memorable. I had her for 16 years, and her name was black magic. My daughter has a dog named Queeny (pictured above). She sold a bunch of her dolls, and toys to buy her and pay for all of the initial food and necessities. Queenys favorite hobby is chasing the cats!"- Joe

Meet Sandy.

"I'm originally from NY. I own four parrots. Their names are Mr. Magoo, Albert Einstein, George and Eli. I also own two plush coat German shepherds, and a siamese cat. That's all I'm going to admit to!"- Sandy

Stranger #96

Meet Clem M.

"I'm a biker, fisherman, dad, and husband. I'm an airman, in the Air Force, and I've been an active guard for 26 years. I like to garden, and I'm a cook. I particularly like to cook for my lady! I've been married for 28 years in two weeks! I live in Northeast Philadelphia, and I've lived here all my life. I'm a city guy! I'm a big Eagles and Phillies fan. I'm not really into baseball and hockey, but i'll get on the bandwagon for the few weeks of the playoffs!"- Clem

Stranger #95

Meet Alisha.

I like fighting. I'm training in boxing right now,and I want to get into a fight soon! I haven't been able to get a fight because I had to get 3 surgeries on my ankles. My first surgery was March of 2009 on my left ankle, then I had another surgery on my right ankle in May of 2009, and then my last one in June of 2011 on y left ankle again. I had problems with bone loss which caused pretty bad fractures, or I probably would've gotten a fight already. I want to get into med school, but my grades aren't that good. I'm a bit of a slacker; I've always been that way. I know I have to do it, because I want to be a doctor. I'm hoping that it's different when I can actually work with the patients!

I'm really into art. I'm trying to get into drawing and painting more! I also make jewelry. I just draw and paint whatever. I've always liked it since I was a little kid. I would always draw when you weren't supposed to, basically on walls, and I marked my cat once with markers. I'm trying to sell my art work, but I haven't gotten a lot done yet. Nothing is finished. There's a store near my house that wants to buy my jewelery. I started making jewelry when I was 10, and I sold it at a craft sale at a church. I'm supposed to be a roman catholic but I haven't gone to church. I don't think I have to follow a religion to be a good person. I've met a lot of religious people who are assholes, judgemental, and they're so rude if you don't follow every rule possible. They're also so quick to tell everyone how horrible of a person they are and how they're going to hell. I just believe in God!"- Alisha

Meet Kevin.

"There's not much that's interesting about myself! What would you like me to tell you? I work for channel 3. I'm a floor director, and I've worked there for over 30 years. I don't want to retire there, but I have no clue what else I want to do. I'm from the shore, and I love the beach! I drive back and forth every day about an hour and a half. I live in Toms River. I coach a scooter team. My son is on it, and he's 13. My other son is a rock star. He has a new album that just came out and their band is called Nemora. It's one of the screamo bands, and he's the screamer! He's the goodlookin' guy in the middle with blonde hair, and I would tell you that he get's his good looks from me, but he'd get mad at me! I'm happily divorced, and in my spare time, I'm just a roady for my sons! I'm a cool dad!"- Kevin

Stranger #93

Meet Jackie Kershaw .

I'm the oldest of 3 daughters. I have an identical twin sister, and do landscape work because I don't want an office job. My twin and I never fight, and have always been really close! We always played sports, and we would compete together, work together, but never really against eachother. She's a catcher, I'm a pitcher, I'm a guard, and she's a forward, I'm right-handed and she's left handed. Our team numbers were even opposite, I was a number 13, and she was 31. We would trick the other team, and it always worked! We go to the same school, but she's a history major and I'm a double major, biology and Spanish. I want to become a CSI agent, and become fluent in Spanish. I love Spanish music, and I listen to it all the time. I don't drink, and I don't smoke. I've never been drunk. I'm not even interested. I've never smoked cigs or weed either. My family drinks but my parents only drink socially. I have a huge family. My mom is 1 of 10, so I have lots of uncles and aunts. It's funny, because my one Aunt Patty married a man named Jerry, and my Uncle Jerry married a woman named Patty!

My twin and I were also born 6 weeks pre-mature and the nurse told my mom that we would never be athletic, or tall. Well, I'm 5'8, my sisters 5'10 and we both play all kinds of sports. I'm passionate about sports and Spanish. I'm into Latino men, because I like Spanish so much and it would be difficult to communicate with someone who didn't speak it. My parents would eventually approve, it would take longer for my dad, but even if my parents werent 100%, I would be with whoever I want because at the end of the day, you need to be happy too. I feel that way about everything in life!"- Jackie

Meet Ryan.

"I have a serious passion for video games. I consider them art. It's a new medium of story telling but with interaction! It's hard to just pick one favorite video game, but if I had to choose, the original Startcraft, I believe from '92 is definitely one of my tops! I want to work with computers and video games because of the art, and writing. One I'm good at, and one I'm not! I'm good at writing, but horrible with art so it would be interesting!" - Ryan

Stranger #91

Meet Hannah Berstein.

"I work with kids with mental disabilities. I teach art and music, and I go to Cedar Crest in Allentown. I'm majoring in Psych/Art Therapy. When I graduate, I want to work in a mental institution for teens, especially teens that suffer from drug use, or who are suicidal. I had a crazy past, and was in an institution, and they wouldn't let me draw at all. They were supposed to help, but they actually made it worse. I was into drugs, and I used to cut, but I eventually I finally realized that life is worth living. Trying to end your life is a permanent solution to a temporary problem!"- Hannah

Meet Kara.

"I'm studying abroad in Africa for a grad program for 4 weeks. I also did a 46 hour dance marathon to benefit kids with cancer. It's called Thon (with Penn State), and you cant sit or sleep for 46 hours straight. You raise the money all year for Hershey Medical Center for a fund called Four Diamonds, and then you have the big marathon. My sorority raised over $100,000, and altogether, everyone raised over 10 million for the fund! You don't have to dance, but they have a dance every hour and you line dance. You stand in a huge room, and you cant see outside so you can't see if it's bright, or dark out, but the time goes pretty fast!"- Kara

Meet Larissa G.

"I'm involved with mid evil recreation work. It's a non-profit organization called SCA. It strands for Society for creative anachronism. We take middle age ideals and bring them into the present day by recreating them. In the organization, we adopt a persona; we look how people used to dressed, and it's research based. The organization gives me a sense of community, learning and fun. It started in California in the 60's and it's international with local groups as well. The overall point I believe is an escape from modern life, and it gives the opportunity to learn. For me, it enables me to meet people that I would have never met before, and I've made a lot of friends! Society as it's own internal ranking, but with this organization, a plumber can become king. We wear costumes, buy clothes, hold meetings, and larger events with fencing and fighting, etc. It's a little bit like the Renaissance fair in a way. My member name in the organization is Lady Elizabeth Underhill!"- Larissa

If you're interested in learning more about this organization, click here: http://www.sca.org/

This is taken from their website-

What is the SCA?

"The Society for Creative Anachronism, or SCA, is an international organization dedicated to researching and re-creating the arts, skills, and traditions of pre-17th-century Europe.
Members of the SCA study and take part in a variety of activities, including combat, archery, equestrian activities, costuming, cooking, metalwork, woodworking, music, dance, calligraphy, fiber arts, and much more. If it was done in the Middle Ages or Renaissance, odds are you'll find someone in the SCA interested in recreating it.

What makes the SCA different from a Humanities 101 class is the active participation in the learning process. To learn about the clothing of the period, you research it, then sew and wear it yourself. To learn about combat, you put on armor (which you may have built yourself) and learn how to defeat your opponent. To learn brewing, you make (and sample!) your own wines, meads and beers.
You will frequently hear SCA participants describe the SCA as recreating the Middle Ages "as they ought to have been." In some ways this is true – we choose to use indoor plumbing, heated halls, and sewing machines. In the dead of winter we have more to eat than King's venison, salt pork and dried tubers. However, a better description is that we selectively recreate the culture, choosing elements of the culture that interest and attract us."

Meet Matthew Hiegle.

"I'm 19 and I've been to Israel, London, Great Britain, Spain, and Denmark. I'd love to go anywhere else; there's not a place that I can think of that I wouldn't want to go to. So, I bought my hat in London on October 1st. London was in the end of a heat wave, and I figured since it was nice, I'd go walking down Brick Lane which is full of shops and markets. It took me a couple hours, I was by myself, got lost, and I refused to ask for directions. I saw a stall in the market, and the guy was selling all types of hats. I spotted fedoras, and asked how much. I got the hat, and walked back to the place I was staying. After that, I wore this hat everywhere, even when I was in the house in my pj's. My one friend told me to take it off, because I was getting scary! I still wear it everyday! My favorite quote is, if you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine by Obi-Wan Kenobi

Meet Kate.

"I'm into behavior in general, but more so animal behavior. You cant change a persons behavior unless they want to but you can manipulate an animals environment to change it. I just adopted a pit mix from the PSPCA. She's 7 months, and her name is Harper. She has all types of issues, shes a basket case! Ever since I've had her, she's become very friendly, and making a lot of progress. She was very aggressive before, she used to jump and lunge at you. With training, and getting her out to run about 5 miles a day, I can give her a warning and she knows. My days are spent mostly with dogs, I walk them, and then my nights are spent bartending. I've been bartending for 8 years, and I need to go back to school! I've planning on going to Emory for their animal behavior program. Right now, I have a bachelors in Psychology. I'm really into exotic animal research, and primate research!"- Kate

"I'm left handed. I didn't learn to ride a bike until I was 14. I got bit by a pitbull when I was younger so now I don't like dogs, any dogs at all. I like cats, and I have a turtle named Frankie. Something interesting about me is that I cant jump on a pogo stick; I've tried and tried, and I really cant do it!"- Jasmine

Meet Moin Vahora

"I'm graduatimg, I actually just finished my last final, and I'm on my way to pick up my cap and gown. I'm a biology major, and I spent two and a half months looking at articles concerning Alzheimer's, and how to reduce the amount of plaques in the brain. I'm going to take the year off, take my GRE's, and go do something with neuroscience. I would like to be a neuro-scientist.  I'm from India, but I moved here when I was 11 months old. I only visited once or twice about ten years ago. I visited my family, rode elephants, and all of that. I like it better it, it's just really different. I did hear that India has become a bit more modernized though. They have McDonald's and all of that stuff there now, but they never had that before!"- Moin

Meet Melissa Santos.

"I had my son when I was 15, and that was a huge struggle for me. I worked at it, because it was worth it! Now, I'm a vice president for a staffing company, and I've been there for 3 years. I have another child, my daughter, and she goes to Temple. She's a nursing student! My son is 25, and my daughter is 20. I met my husband (we are separated now) when I was 13, and we were together for 16 years. We eventually grew apart, and grew up. We started to become interested in different things, but we still get along great! I actually still go on vacations with his sister. I love playing pool! I shoot for Daly's pool league, and I've been shooting for four years; I'm ranked a 3!"- Melissa

"I've been studying French for 6 years, and I'm finally studying in France for a year, and taking all of my classes in French. I'm going to stay in Southern France. I'm doing it more independently through American University of Provence. You live with a host family your entire stay, and you don't meet them until they pick you up from the airport. I'll be spending 6 months in Aix-en-Provence with a host family, and the next 6 months in Marseille with another host family. They're 20 min apart, but very different cultures! That's been my goal." - Meagan

Stranger #81

Meet Elena Christine.

"My favorite color is lime green. I'm allergic to chocolate, but I'm not horribly allergic. I still eat it all the time, and everyone yells at me! I'm Greek. This Easter we roasted a lamb on a spit over coals from 9am-5pm. It's a full lamb with eyelashes, eyeballs and all. One thing about me is that I never remember peoples names. I was born on the Jersey shore, and yes, unfortunately I like the show! I'm a film major and want to make music videos. I directed a summer camp for 2 years, and I was the youngest to ever direct. I'm happy that I'm #81; The number eight is my families lucky number! My parents met in the 8th month in 1988, and got married 8 months later. My birthday is on the 16th, and my brother's is on the 24th which are both multiples of 8!"- Elena

Stranger #80-

Meet Ian.

"I'm from Maine. I've traveled pretty much around the world except for seven countries. I love scuba diving; I've been doing it since I was 10. I was the youngest to be certified in all of Maine. A lot of people say that you've got to do the coral reef, and I've done that, but I actually enjoyed scuba diving in Alaska the most. I got accepted to 36 different colleges, 5 with full scholarships. I chose a smaller school because of family influence. I mean, I don't want to be known by family names, I want to be known for me. I was accepted into Harvard, Yale, and most of the Ivy league schools, and my family is all well connected to them. I don't want to be a legacy. Yeah, money would be nice but how do I know that I got in for myself? I'm from somewhere small, in little old Maine, and I wanted to be near a big city.

I've been with my girlfriend for 3 years, I met her on campus, and she got me into sewing and crocheting. We made 177 stuffed animals and then donated them to a children's hospital. We bought everything, and then sewed everything together. I have 7 close guy friends. One is gay, and lives with his husband, but he also has a wife. They're all ok with living with each other because she says that there is never a dish in the sink, toilet seat is never up, and when she doesn't feel like having sex, he's there for him. They take her on vacations for months at a time. They're filthy rich so they'll rent out a beach front condo and stay there for a month. Her name is Helen, and we found her in India. She was kidnapped from the states when she was 5, and taken to India. She was a prostitute, and we found her stabbed on the ground. I called for emergency, and wound up giving her a blood transfusion or she wouldn't have been able to live. Now she is a blood analyst. She was told that she would never be able to have kids, but she's pregnant with twins. They have so much money, and they're so picky that they've changed the paint in the nursery 186 times. My other friend is a designer, and he is also rich, and gay. He wont get out of bed unless he is guaranteed to make at least ten million dollars for his work. One time he flew into Philadelphia and we went to the Willow grove mall. He brought dresses that no one has ever seen before, and he dressed me up as a drag queen in all of them. We were in Sears, and I was wearing one of his dresses, and an employee came up to me, and said "we don't have anything for your kind here", and a random stranger clocked him in the head. The manager appeared out of no where, and apologized, and gave me a $500 gift card. Of course, I acted all sad and cried in my shoulder, so it was worth it.

Another guy friend I met on a cruise I was traveling on, and he was getting married to his male partner. Somehow I got into the wedding which was on the ship, and him and his partner were celebrating. Either one of them has never drank alcohol before, and my friends partner happened to be allergic to alcohol. They were drinking wine, and his partner died right on the spot on their wedding day, right in my arms. Now we're friends. All of the guys I'm close with are rich, they all have money. I don't know what they see in me. They look at me in such high regard. It's funny, when we all go out to dinner, they'll have their Benz, hummers, lambos lined up and then there's my little Honda pilot. but when we're at the dinner table, they'll put me at the head of the table. It's crazy, but we've been friends since I was 9. I'm the connector, I keep us all together."- Ian

I have to admit, there was much more. Due to his concern of his own safety, and other students on campus that he chose to tell me about (that could possibly be reading), and has "blacklisted him" (his words), I told Ian that I wouldn't put anything on the blog that he had, in confidence, asked me not to. So, I'm doing just that, and keeping my word. I will say that we talked for almost a good two hours, and the stories only got more bizarre. To say the least, it was a pretty interesting day.

Meet Collin MacGregor.

"I was a professional musician for six years. I played in a band called comic book heroes; I played the drums for them. We walked the red carpet at the American Music Awards, and performed at the after party! We were a classic type of rock band, like Zeppelin, very old school."- Collin MacGregor
