About Me

My photo
I'm not doing this project to necessarily make new longterm friends, or go have a drink with these people. Nor is it to pass any judgements on ones life. My goal is to simply meet interesting, and maybe not so interesting strangers who I wouldve never taken the time to talk to otherwise. One that may differ, or perhaps relate to my own life. So many times, you walk past someone, and they wont even raise their head in the slightest to say hello. I'll never understand why. The challenge to myself is not only to surpass that simple hello with one person a day, but to convince them to look into my lens and tell me something about themselves. My name is Amanda Surkin, and this is my journey of meeting 100 new faces. Take the time to listen, you may learn something :)

Stranger #69

Meet Adesanya.

"My name is out of the yoruba culture from Nigeria. I'm 50 years old and I'm a graduate student at the University of Penn. I've traveled all over the world with a non-profit organization for international community development, that's what my first masters degree was in. I spent my first 20 years as an accountant and then went back to school for the social work/community development degree. My second masters that I'm currently working on is executive coaching and organizational consultant. When I worked for the non-profit, they had offices in 24 countries, and I've traveled to at least 10 of them. I've been to Vietnam, Bangkok, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Tanzania, and DRC (Democratic Republic of the Congo). I would buy jewelery when I traveled, and the South African village women who had HIV Aids would sit all day, and bead in order to buy their medicine. They would come to the city, and sell their handmade jewelry to tourists, because they made more than they would selling to tourists than to people of their own culture. I bought the jewelery while I was there for $25.00 and would bring them home and easily sold the pieces for $50.00. I sent the difference ($25.00) back in a check to the village to help them. The women were so happy!" - Adesanya
